Icebreakers

Description

This energetic warm-up will get your group focused, listening, limber, and "ready to roll".

Players

Minimum number of players: At least 5

Maximum number of players: No maximum

Materials

Space Required

Large, open space

Instructions

1. Invite participants to find a standing spot in the room where they are not touching anyone and have enough space to move.

2.  Explain that this game is going to require listening skills and quick thinking.  The first commands they will hear are "freeze," and "go" (or "walk").  The go or walk command means to mill about the space in a way that is casual, not rushed - like a leisurly stroll down a city street.

3.  Command participants to go and freeze several times.

4.  Introduce the next commands one by one in different patterns, speeds, and numbers:  turn (180 degree pivot in the opposide direction), twizzle (knees bent, sparkly jazz hands), and twizzle (360 degree jumping turn in the air).

5.  Have participant add a few of their own commands.

6.  Have a few particpants take over the reigns as facilitator.

7.  Debrief:  Why do we do this excercise?  What does it have to do with this class?  What skills are needed to be successful?  How did you do? What did you find easy/challenging?

Adaptations

This game can be adapted into an elimination competition in which the commands are given out while participants are in a circle, rather than spread across the room.
