Today you are not going to portray your character... you are going to become someone elses character.

Basic props used by the characters and some very basic costumes.

Each cast member will choose a new character by drawing a character name from a hat. It does not matter if you are a boy and choose a girl's character. (Since I do this with elementary age children, if they really do not want to play a character of the opposite sex I allow them to pick a different character of the same sex.) I will choose sections of scenes and have the kids work through the scene as their new character. I encourage them to use their face, voice and body and not depend upon props, etc. although props are available for them if they need to use them. It is a wonderful exercise for young kids as they are able to use what they have learned during rehearsals and take it to a different level. I also ask them to actually sing the songs of other characters. As they portray these characters I will stop them and direct them. I will also ask them questions regarding why they moved a certain way or why they said a line as they did. It is a very interesting game and the kids have a lot of fun.
