I choose a character from the show we are working on and I describe that character in a word that the students might run into while taking their SAT's. Music Man and the word could be For example  charlatan. The kids would discuss what they think the word means. When we discover the true definition, they tell me which character it best describes and give me four more words to describe, in this case, Harold Hill. The may suggest words like passionate, creative, charming, smooth. We discuss how we show this on stage. We record the info and create a simple character study of all the main and minor characters. It  increases vocabulary and critical thinking. We share our thoughts so the whole drill only takes about ten minutes out of rehearsal time. I have actually had a student tell me that one of our words was on an SAT test she took.
