Have the cast do research on the authenticity of the play being produced or into the play's era by making an oral report or by answering questions about the time and place that anchors the show.
If, as in the case of Into the Woods, the setting is not a real place, then the assignment is to research the original tales or to understand the workings and the 'reality' those characters live in. If we are asking the audience to accept a land of witches and giants and ladies trapped in towers, then we have to make that world seem as real as possible.
Don't make this too formal - its not a term paper, its just an investigation into the world we are asking them to immerse themselves into.
